While Android menus can vary slightly between device manufacturers (such as Samsung, Google, or Motorola), this guide outlines the standard paths to help you configure your mobile settings.
Setting Up Mobile Internet (APN)
If you cannot access the internet using mobile data, you may need to check your Access Point Name (APN) settings.
Navigate to Settings > Wireless/Connections > Mobile Networks > Access Point Names (APN).
Select Menu > New APN.
Set the Name to
internet.Save the changes and restart your phone.
Connecting to Wi-Fi
Using Wi-Fi is a great way to save your mobile data allowance and often provides faster speeds.
Go to your Apps menu or Settings.
Select Wi-Fi and toggle the switch to ON.
Choose your network from the list. If you see a padlock icon, it is a secured network and will require a password.
Safety Tip: Be cautious when using public, unsecured Wi-Fi networks for sensitive tasks like online banking or accessing confidential information.
Managing Roaming & Network Settings
How to Turn Off Data Roaming
To avoid charges while travelling, you can specifically disable data roaming:
Go to Settings > Wireless/Connections > Mobile Networks > Data Roaming and toggle it OFF.
Using Airplane Mode
When Airplane Mode is switched ON, all mobile network, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth connectivity is disabled. Note that you will be unable to make or receive calls and texts until this mode is switched off.
Manually Selecting a Roaming Network
If you are abroad and your phone isn't connecting to one of our roaming partners, you can select a network manually:
Ensure Data Roaming is switched ON in your Mobile Network settings.
Go to Settings > Mobile Networks > Network Operators.
Select Search Networks.
Choose your preferred network from the list of available partners.
Important Note: Purchasing Apps via Google Play
Currently, Google does not support paid app sales in the Isle of Man, Guernsey, or Jersey.
Free Apps: Remain fully available to download from the Google Play Store.
Paid Apps: If you have paid for content that you can no longer access, please raise your refund request or complaint directly with Google at support.google.com/googleplay.
Alternative: Many customers use the Amazon Appstore as an alternative to paid Android apps. You can search for "Amazon Android Appstore" in your mobile browser to download it.
